More than a quarter of young people, some as young as 10, are so depressed that they have contemplated suicide, according to a new study.
The findings are published tomorrow to coincide with the start of National Depression Week, which this year is highlighting the plight of the increasing numbers of children and teenagers who succumb to depression.

"Stress levels in teenagers have reached record levels, an official study has found.
"The survey, by the Medical Research Council (MRC), a government-funded research body, found that nearly one in four 15-year-olds -24 per cent of those surveyed - are now thought to suffer from anxiety disorders, sleeplessness and forms of depression."

"Suicide is the greatest single cause of violent death around the globe and almost equalled deaths from homicide and war combined in 2000, according to the World Health Organisation.
"In its first report on violence and health, the WHO called on countries to tackle violence as a public health problem similar to AIDS or smoking. It said 1.6 million people were killed in acts of violence in 2000 and millions more were injured and suffered physical, sexual and mental problems."
